Nashville, TN -- Music City Roots: Live From The Loveless Cafe, Nashville’s acclaimed weekly Americana music broadcast series, will host a special edition on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 featuring artists included on the new anthology Putumayo Presents Bluegrass. Slated to perform are bluegrass music artists the Sam Bush Band, Town Mountain, Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen and a duo featuring banjoist Alison Brown and fiddler Andrea Zonn. Bluegrass is the first collection Putumayo has devoted to one of America’s greatest musical genres, and its wide ranging survey of styles fits comfortably with Music City Roots’ eclectic programming philosophy.
“Bluegrass is one of America’s most significant contributions to the music of the world, so it’s perfect that Putumayo, a legendary world music record label, has produced a wide-ranging bluegrass collection,” Craig Havighurst, Music City Roots Senior Producer and music journalist, states. “We at the show are huge bluegrass fans and we’ve presented some of the artists from the Bluegrass anthology before. Next Wednesday night will be a lot of fun, and anybody who’s new to bluegrass music will learn a lot about the state of the art in this exciting and fast-growing music scene.”
Released May 22, Putumayo Presents Bluegrass includes many of the genre’s most renowned artists along with exciting new discoveries. The album is Putumayo’s first venture into the world of bluegrass and includes Alison Krauss, Sam Bush, Peter Rowan, David Grisman and other stars alongside some of today’s up-and-coming young groups like Railroad Earth, Town Mountain and Uncle Earl.
In welcoming Town Mountain and Frank Solivan to Music City Roots, the show snags two of the most vibrant emerging bands in the genre. Alison Brown is a lauded, innovative banjo player who co-owns Nashville’s Compass Records, while Andrea Zonn has played fiddle across a huge range of country and bluegrass recordings, besides touring with Vince Gill and James Taylor. And Sam Bush has been hailed as the “King of Newgrass” for his visionary extension of the bluegrass tradition into the rock and roll age.
Putumayo World Music was established in 1993 to introduce people to the music of the world’s cultures. The label grew out of the Putumayo clothing company, founded by Dan Storper in 1975 and sold in 1997. Co-founder Michael Kraus joined Storper to help launch Putumayo World Music. In the past eighteen years, the record label has become known primarily for its upbeat and melodic compilations of great international music characterized by the company’s motto: “guaranteed to make you feel good!”
Music City Roots is a weekly live radio show and HD webcast featuring the finest roots and Americana music based in or passing through Nashville.
